At the moment, AI is being used critically to make the customer more satisfied with the service provided. For example, Spotify uses Artificial Intelligence that monitors when the user listens to music from their service. It monitors whether the user is listening to the whole song or just skipping through it, this way over time it builds up and understands the type of music you like. This way it recommends music based on the type of music you like to listen. If there is a particular song, even if it is not that popular but fits the theme and genre that you listen to, this AI will recommend it. This way, the user is satisfied, and artists who are still starting in the music industry still get their songs out there and recommended to the users (Nigam).

Artificial Intelligence Generated Music

Alan Turing was the first to record computer-generated music back in 1951. Computer-generated or AI-generated music has continued to develop ever since. AI starts by analysing data from different compositions when it creates musical pieces. The algorithm learns what characteristics and patterns create music that is enjoyable or that mimics a certain genre. The AI model can also compose innovative musical numbers by combining elements in unique random ways that are new to us. Google has created an open-source platform called , with Artificial Intelligence Networks and songs which are written and performed by AI. Here you can find a lot of projects, tools or games that create music. For example is a game that generates music, and to win you need to listen and sort the song in the right order. I have never learned an instrument or music theory in general. is an application in Magenta which lets you pretend you are a piano master, because it tries to create good music and good notes based on the input that you give it. These are both games, but along with these there are whole pages filled with Artificial Intelligence based music tools which lets you create loops or even generate whole songs (Marr, 2019). OpenAI has created , which is also open source. This is a neural net that generates music, including rudimentary singing, as raw audio in a variety of genres and artist styles. Jukebox will output a music sample which is produced from scratch when it is provided with a genre, artist and lyrics (I really recommend you go listen to these samples). This is mostly interesting because it is mimicking or creating music with another artist’s voice. Having said this, OpenAI researchers write that “there is a significant gap between these generations and human-created music” and “while the generated songs show local musical coherence, follow traditional chord patterns, and can even feature impressive solos, we do not hear familiar larger musical structures such as choruses that repeat” (Leskin, 2020).

Personally I think that Artificial Intelligence generated songs raise some great, interesting questions. The first one that I mainly think about as an artist, if the song is generated by Artificial Intelligence, is it still considered art? Who is the artist in that scenario? It also raises some legal issues, because it is mimicking other artist’s voices, which when you think about it, is quite powerful and dangerous. Once again we can see how Artificial Intelligence is being used to create Art. Next I will be talking about how Artificial Intelligence is being used to improve visual Effects in Movies in my .
